What and Why?
To start, what is beard balm, and should you be using it? At ManBeast, it’s no secret that our primary focus is on Beard Oils. We’ve carefully tailored them to different body chemistries in order to help everyone reach their full potential in the shortest amount of time. Beard Oil is all about providing the nutrients your beard needs to grow quickly, be healthy, and look great.
Beard Balm, on the other hand, is mostly about styling and taming strays. While our Lion Tamer Premium Beard Balm shares some of the same ingredients as our oils (along with unrefined mango butter for additional nourishment), it also contains bees wax to provide some hold. Because it’s nut-free and hypoallergenic, it’s the perfect compliment to any of the ManBeast Custom Beard Oils.
Think of it this way: Oil will nourish your beard while providing a small amount of style. Balm will help style your beard while providing a small amount of nourishment.
So how much style will you get? Different balms provide different amounts. Our Lion Tamer Balm is designed to provide a very light styling hold. It tames flyaways and will keep everything in a nice natural form for the day. It is not meant to sculpt, and it is not a mustache wax. Depending on your length, you may find you get enough styling from our oils alone.
Where?
We’ve already discussed that beard oils should be applied to both skin and hair. With balm, you’ll want to focus more on hair. The goal should be to get it applied evenly to the full length of each hair. It can be a bit tricky the first couple of times because beard balm is solid at room temperature and needs to be warmed up to apply. Don’t sweat it - you’ll be a pro in no time.
When?
Unlike beard oil, beard balm should be applied when your beard is dry. Water will naturally repel the bees wax and make it harder to coat the hairs. If you want to apply after showering, wait until your beard is thoroughly dry. If you’ve already used beard oil, give it at least 10 minutes to fully absorb.
How Much?
This is heavily dependent on the length of your beard. However, since the product must be melted, it’s easiest to apply in small amounts, working on one area at a time.
How?
Scrape a small amount (the size of a small pebble) onto the back of your finger or thumbnail and rub in between fingers to melt. (Lion Tamer Beard Balm may feel slightly grainy at first due to the unrefined mango butter we use. Don’t sweat it - just a few extra rubs will get everything smoothed out). Once completely melted, quickly begin applying to your beard.
Start under your chin, working from the neck out as you move down the length of the hair. Scrape out a bit more and apply to your sides working from the top down and using a small circular motion to maximize transfer. Repeat the process and finish with your mustache and the area under your lips. Use your fingertips to evenly coat the hairs in this area.
Once completely applied, use a good quality brush (boars hair is preferred) to completely distribute the balm throughout. Brush lightly in a downward motion along sides and front and moving towards the neck under your chin (with the grain). Once completely distributed, a brush or comb can be used to achieve desired style.
